Ironing out the Wrinkles

The recent installation of the unique solar system has brought some surprising benefits that no-one saw coming. Granted there is a huge increase in internet use, a vast improvement in computer access for all, not to mention stable power at last ... all that could have been expected. But who could have anticipated an ironing expansion? 

It turns out that Ironing (with a capital 'I') is a super skill of most WTA teenagers. And in Uganda, Ironing is practically a national pastime. For years, students have been using small, charcoal irons at the weekend in order to keep their uniform immaculately pressed and super smart - crisp, white shirts need an accurate, skilled technique. The downside was the odd burn mark here and there, not to mention the considerable fire risk in the dormitories. Roll on several years and now students can bring electric irons, (called 'flatirons'), which are a safer, affordable and practical alternative.

As soon as the Sunday service is over, The Ironing Event begins, the music starts up and the Main Hall soon resembles a busy laundry service! Large teams set up tables and sheets and off they go with a huge sense of fun & competition. It is both unexpectedly popular and is hugely appreciated. Who knew that Ironing could be another WTA selling point?

Meanwhile, with all this talk of ironing out wrinkles, the school's timetable has been an unusually complicated problem to solve this year. This is mostly due to several factors: the changeability of part-time teachers, the scarcity of good Science teachers and the 'extra' subjects added to the WTA timetable. These are: Activate, (the Christian lifestyle programme), Library Lessons and dedicated IT Research sessions for all classes. All three 'special' subjects are compulsory as they are considered essential to WTA learning. However, despite being half way through the school year, the timetable has already been revised and smoothed at least 15 times. Happily, the most recent version seems to be wrinkle free, so far. Hopefully, now it is finally fixed, they can strike while this iron is hot  - and move on 'seamlessly' with the rest of the term.
