Happy World Teachers' Day! New Term: exams are looming
Elspeth Dugdale | October 5, 2026

World Teacher's Day is officially Monday October 5th, so it's a great excuse to celebrate all the teachers at WTA, at the Connect Centres and in the community. Without teachers, a school is just a building and would be completely redundant. School fees at WTA really only cover the cost of the teachers' salaries and of food - both of which are crucial to a school's existence.

The third term is the busiest one of all, so the timetable is crammed full of extra lessons, past papers, late-night sessions and extra meetings. Thursday 8th is 'Briefing Day' for all S4 (O' level candidates) and considered to be the first exam day. All teachers meet with the students in order to encourage them and also warn them very seriously against exam misconduct. But there is also an expectation of sharing 'Success Cards' with students from parents, teachers, (and also ServeDirect); sometimes there are even gifts - so it's not all bad.

WTA makes a priority of recruiting outstanding alumni, once they have graduated in Education, often giving them opportunities for teaching practice before they qualify. Having been at WTA, they totally understand, value & support the unique ethos & approach of WTA, having benefitted themselves. They make a huge difference to the students as they are often strong role models too.
Awany Benson & Ejuku Emmanuel, Ekwaru Manoa, Engola Ivan, Aber Mercy (at Connect Gulu), Ongiji Henry, Engola Arnold (at Connect Gulu), plus Sabella Cate & Ojok Jackson at Lukomera Demo Primary School - also connected to WTA.
Wonderful teachers, raising and inspiring the next generation.
