Great excitement at Lukomera St Stephen's Primary School earlier this month, when a delivery of new desks arrived for one of the classes. St Stephen's is the closest school to WTA and send classes about once a week to The Bridge for English and Maths 'booster' lessons and for Special Needs support sessions.
Since 2009, there has been a particular connection between this school and Sparsholt Primary School in Hampshire http://www.sparsholt.hants.sch.uk/index.html - This arose as a result of a visit from Helena Davies, a great friend of ours, who was part of the 2009 Team Trip to Wobulenzi. Over the years, Helena's class and the whole school community at Sparsholt have been incredibly enthusiastic and energetic about raising money to support Lukomera St Stephen's -in particular, the Special Needs Unit at the school. Children in both schools have exchanged letters and cards, telling each other about school life and traditional customs and celebrations. This would not have been possible without the commitment of both teachers - Helena in Hampshire and Madam Sarah in Lukomera.
Their fundraising has been so successful that they have contributed to a new kitchen and new beds for the Special Needs children, supplies of exercise books and pens, craft materials and sports equipment. Also they have helped with resources and teacher training material and advice for The Bridge.
Towards the end of this (Ugandan) school year, we asked the school if there were any pressing needs that we could help with - and these lovely new desks are the result of that conversation. Each desk seats 4 primary pupils. At the beginning of November, P7 (the top primary class) will sit their PLE (Primary Leaving Examination), which is the potential access point to secondary school, so no doubt the desks already have a first official function for this class. And we hope to welcome some of those successful students to S1 at WTA in February 2015.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the whole Sparsholt Primary School community of children, teachers, parents - and especially Helena, for their amazing fundraising activities, generosity, fun and friendship towards the children and teachers at Lukomera for the last five years.
